Books: Ingo Maurer: Designing with Light

Ingo Maurer: Designing with Light

Editor: Bernhard Dessecker (Prestel January 2009)

Ingo Maurer has been illuminating lives since 1966, when he designed his first light fixture for an installation at the Herman Miller showroom in Munich, Germany. His creation was entitled “Bulb” and featured a light bulb within a light bulb. The design was so successful that Maurer had to produce more to match the demand. Since then, his fascination with lighting, his pursuit of simplicity of form and his talents as a graphic designer and typographer have brought him to the forefront of his field. His work has been exhibited in countless museums and it has brightened urban bridges, artistic exhibitions, retail and commercial spaces as well as many private homes.

Arranged thematically, this dazzling retrospective brings together an extensive and representative selection of Maurer’s lamps and lighting systems. Contributions by design experts, including Issey Miyake and Paola Antonelli, round out this portrait of a creative mind who continues to push the boundaries of lighting design.

Books: Le Corbusier, The Art of Architecture

Le Corbusier, The Art of Architecture

Editor: Alexander von Vegesack (Vitra Design Museum October 2008)

Newly reprinted to coincide with the major exhibition in Liverpool, starting on the 2nd October, this exhibition catalogue and book offers an overview of Le Corbusier’s work as an architect and a designer of comprehensive ideas. It provides insights into his furniture, interior design and art as a catalyst for the creative developments of his time.

As a key figure in 20th century architecture, Le Corbusier had a major influence on the cultural life of his time. Le Corbusier – The Art of Architecture presents an overview of his work, which included not only architectural projects, interior design and furniture but also paintings, textiles, sculptures, drawings and books. Essays of well-known Le Corbusier experts examine outstanding aspects in Le Corbusier’s work such as the relation of sculpture and architecture, his work as an interior designer, his fascination with new media and the technical object and his life-long interest in the Orient.

Based on the latest research results and on a rich choice of previously unpublished material, this book is a comprehensive introduction to Le Corbusier’s work and influences, but also offers new discoveries for the many people already familiar with the work of the “Architect of the Century”. The publication is accompanying the first major Le Corbusier retrospective in more than 20 years. It includes texts by Stanislaus von Moos, Jean-Louis Cohen, Arthur Rüegg, Beatriz Colomina and Mateo Kries and an essay by Charles Knevitt, Director of RIBA Trust.

The Disappearing Picture

THE DISAPPEARING PICTURE

Over the last fifteen years, Western interior design has got Zen.

Has finally got ‘it’: Relishing the sense of geometric purity, reaching into the connections between spaces, sensitively contrasting material and texture.

It represents a shift in mindset. We are finally able to appreciate opulence represented by absence. It’s a huge change for a culture used to expressing the good life in the form of more and more things, ever greater quantities of ’stuff’. (more…)

Books: Corporate Interiors 9

Corporate Interiors 9

Roger Yee (Visual Reference Publications January 2009)

Corporate Interiors No. 9 captures the sense of business determination, inspiration and pragmatism as corporate America deals with a challenging global economy. See how the nation’s progressive businesses and institutions give their employees the means to excel in difficult times, with facilities designed to support optimum working conditions focusing on workflow rather than organisational rank.

Business leaders and their architects and interior designers will find scores of recently completed projects, showcased in 100s of colour images, an effective means of assessing their options for planning, designing and building state-of-the-art facilities. This book is meant for easy reference and repeated use, with each project indexed by company name and location. In no other publication will the reader encounter such innovative new facilities serving organisations and staffs with workspaces their predecessors might scarcely recognise.
