The tour around “Smart-ologic Corian® Living”
The concepts are based on the formability and the sensorial quality of the wide range of current colours and types of DuPont™ Corian® techno-surface (including also the brand new 2010 Eco-Concrete and Eco-Terrazzo series with recycled content) and on a possible future bio-based evolution of DuPont™ Corian®, a high-tech surfacing material that has already received important independent certifications and recognitions for its environmental performance (like GreenGuard®, NAHB North American Builders Association, U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Green Building Rating System, ISO 14025 Green Choice, Ecospecifier, Scientific Certification Systems) and for its hygiene (like LGA QualiTest, NSF International and Royal Institute for Public Health).
An exploration that, beyond the magic of DuPont™ Corian®, showcases and interprets aesthetics and environmental sustainability, both through this amazing material and also by means of other materials and technologies by DuPont (DuPont™ Zodiaq® quartz surface, DuPont™ Energain® panels for energy consumption reduction, DuPont™ Tyvek® advanced building membrane and design material, DuPont photovoltaic system) and other ideas, solutions and products signed by Karim.
A key role in this project has been played by German company Industrie-Manufaktur Hasenkopf (which has masterfully fabricated DuPont™ Corian® meeting the complex and highly demanding project requirements and specifications), by Italian brands Luxit and I Tre (whose low environmental impact lighting solutions based on different technologies perfectly met the technical and artistic specifications set by this project), by Italian firm Flomar (which fabricated the two outstanding monolithic installations in DuPont™ Zodiaq®) and by WOW, Japanese visual communications studio (whose artistic video expresses the project philosophy in a poetic high-tech format).
Upon entering “Smart-ologic Corian® Living”, one first encounters the garden delineated by large lime green walls to the left and right of the location entrance. The intricate and suggestive Digital Nature pattern by Karim is carved via advanced CNC tooling machines into the walls made in DuPont™ Corian® (colour Lime Ice), into which some niches host a range of unique self watering vases able to efficiently control the flow of water to plants (a project by Karim for the American company Grobal). When the walls in DuPont™ Corian® are backlit, they transform into a fascinating background, increasing the appeal of this very special environment.
The Trex lamp by I Tre, designed by Karim, is also displayed in the area that conceptually represents the garden.
The Eko Bench, an impressive outdoor seating solution, made with a futuristic concept of DuPont™ Corian® (coming from the research laboratories of DuPont) incorporating both bio-based ingredients and recycled material, is the key player in this area. In the vision of Karim, this bench can incorporate an automatic system for the collection of rain water used to self-water the green mantle of grass planted into one of the seat’s undulating curves.
On the floor, close to Eko Bench, are some amazing loudspeakers made with DuPont™ Corian® designed by Karim. These high-tech devices enhance the acoustic and aesthetic qualities of DuPont™ Corian® and integrate an innovative technology by Laboratorio Audio. All the loudspeakers have been masterfully made by Planit, a company specialized in the fabrication of products in DuPont™ Corian®. The different interiors show more examples of these loudspeakers.
To the right of the entrance, Karim Rashid’s artistic vision materialises in two bicycle "sculptures", made entirely in DuPont™ Corian®. Karim has deconstructed the conventional elements of this traditional, environmentally-friendly vehicle and has used them to form an ultra modern looking futuristic system of personal transport.
Made using four new colours (Antique Amethyst, Sweet Violet, Warm Gray and Bluepowder) of DuPont™ Corian® from the Eco-Concrete 2010 collection with recycled content, the bicycles are displayed on a floor made with the colours (Palladian Black, Palladian Gray and Palladian Brown) from the 2010 Eco-Terrazzo collection of DuPont™ Corian®, also including recycled content. The flooring in DuPont™ Corian® is characterized by an organic pattern designed by Karim and evokes the aesthetics of rocks and minerals.
To the right of the bicycles, is a feature wall of intricately patterned modules from the photovoltaic system by DuPont, a solution providing high energy efficiency, excellent resistance to weathering agents and easy installation combined with good aesthetics.
Exploring further, one encounters two fascinating monolithic presences: a counter (used as reception for the event) and a large bench, both made in DuPont™ Zodiaq®, designed by Karim and fabricated by Italian company Flomar.
Featuring a fluid wave-like design by Karim, both these visually high impact elements are made by combining four recent colours of DuPont™ Zodiaq® with a futuristic concept of DuPont™ Zodiaq® incorporating environmentally sustainable bio-based ingredients.
Like soft drapery, with its sumptuous shape and large dimensions (four meters long), the bench in DuPont™ Zodiaq® surrounds a mirror-clad column creating a large and colourful seating area inspired by a combination of organic elements and forms. Suspended above the bench are other examples of the loudspeakers in DuPont™ Corian® designed by Karim.
Opposite the counter and the bench, the artistic creativity of Japanese studio WOW will transport the visitor into a poetic animation illustrating the ideas, concepts and solutions that inspire and populate “Smart-ologic Corian® Living”, emphasizing the importance of respecting the environment for the future of the generations to come.
The elegant vertical cladding in DuPont™ Corian® placed on the surrounding walls attracts visitors with its beautiful pattern. Behind them, one can see the innovative energy saving panels DuPont™ Energain®. These panels incorporate an intelligent phase change material, a DuPont invention, which absorbs the heat that hits the structure of the house, and then gradually releases it inside when the temperature decreases, improving the overall energy efficiency of the building.
The creative thinking of Karim for “Smart-ologic Corian® Living” has also touched the roof. A pattern conceived by the designer himself is printed on a flexible sheet structure in DuPont™ Tyvek®, visible in the false ceiling that symbolically represents the roof.
DuPont™ Tyvek® advanced breathable membrane for roofs – a solution which has revolutionized and continues to innovate the construction techniques – acts like a windbreaker, resists to wind- and air infiltration, as well as water intrusion and helps to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient building. Totally recyclable, DuPont™ Tyvek® building membrane is made with HDPE processed via a unique and patented DuPont technology.
The interiors (kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom)
The concept home designed by Karim includes a long, curvaceous wall made in different colours of DuPont™ Corian® (Designer White, Tea Rose, Vanilla, Peach, Summer Sky, Beach Glass, Sea Grass). The wall’s elegant conformation of concave and convex forms contours its way throughout the interiors, to visually define kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom, and embrace the visitor in a reassuring protective pod-like structure.
Karim proposes a fun and convivial kitchen concept, characterized by fluid lines and natural organic forms that create a pleasant living space; an exploration of the communal experience of cooking and entertaining in this open space environment. The self supporting structure of the kitchen island demonstrates once again the amazing formability and the expressive and structural possibilities of DuPont™ Corian®, here in the new 2010 colour Designer White.
Composed of three petal-shaped sections, the kitchen island rests on a slender support that confers a touch of refined elegance. Each petal-like section incorporates a different function: water (integrated sink), snack and cooking (with an induction hob by Gorenje, designed by Karim, that is quick and easy to use, offers low energy consumption, safety and the seductive aspect of a graphic pattern conceived by Karim).
Above the island hangs a kitchen hood – also in DuPont™ Corian® in the Designer White colour – designed by Karim that mirrors the form of the island below.
In Karim‘s vision, kitchen scraps can be composted for plants and garden in a specific container conveniently positioned at center of the island.. The kitchen island is further characterized by the interaction of luminous LED cold light solutions provided by Luxit with the unique translucency of DuPont™ Corian®.
Along the sinuous kitchen wall materializes a vast wall unit made entirely in DuPont™ Corian® (Designer White colour), providing ample storage and worktop space. The flooring in the kitchen is made in DuPont™ Corian® Blueberry Ice.
The Konkord stools designed by Karim for Slide are also present in the kitchen.
The living room
Entering the soothing and relaxing living area, the eye is immediately captured by the immense sofa made with a new 2010 colour of DuPont™ Corian® (Sweet Violet) which includes recycled content. An anti-bacterial, non toxic silicone is used to create a cushioned seat within the sofa for optimum comfort.
Delicately illuminated with LED lighting, the sofa integrates a fireplace by the Italian company Intentions into one of its extremities providing contemporaneously light and heat; it is fuelled with bio-ethanol and does not need maintenance.
The environment is completed by a coffee table designed by Karim in DuPont™ Corian® (in the 2010 colour Palladian Gray containing recycled material).
Connected by flooring in DuPont™ Corian® of the same colour (Lime Ice, a soft and delicate pastel lime), the living room and bedroom converge one into the other, eliminating any rigid definition of space.
This area is dominated by a large bed in DuPont™ Corian® (Lime Ice) that seems to float in space thanks to its organic form and continuous hue between the floor and the bed. Embraced by the delicate and soft ambient lighting created with the application of warm LED light, the bed contains a mattress covered with a light type of DuPont™ Tyvek® non-woven structure printed with a pattern designed by Karim.
The wall behind the headboard incorporates a luminous sconce integrated into the surface of DuPont™ Corian®, an elegant solution that creates fascinating plays of light.
The motif printed on the mattress is taken from the clothing hung near the bed, also made in DuPont™ Tyvek®. The fabrication of DuPont™ Tyvek® for the elements in this area was performed by the Italian company Bonetti.
Beyond the design and the distinctive chromatic flair by Karim, the bathroom proposes other particularly interesting items. The partition which separates the bath area from the bedroom integrates the toilet and wash basin into a single elegant unit.
Made in DuPont™ Corian® (using the Designer White and Mint Ice colours), its fluid form is dominated by the multifunction mirror that incorporates changing RGB lighting and surprising effects: the image that decorates its surface magically disappears when someone appears in the mirror’s reflection!
The bathroom wall in DuPont™ Corian® integrates – thanks to the superior formability that has made this DuPont material known around the world – luminous sconces used also as convenient clothes hooks. The flooring in this bath area is made in DuPont™ Corian® (colours Strawberry Ice and Mint Ice).
Also the shower, a cylindrical conformation made with translucent types of DuPont™ Corian® (Strawberry Ice and Mint Ice), contributes to the fascinating quality of the area, leaving one to perceive the outline of a person within, with a playful "now you see/now you don’t see" effect.
